SUMMARY:Intelligent Systems for Characters\, Creatures and Creativity: An
 Interdisciplinary Approach - Steve DiPaola\, Associate Professor\, Simon F
 raser University

DESCRIPTION:By using parameterization techniques which model the knowledge
space of a living or cognitive systems (eg. the behavior space of whales)
it is possible to use AI techniques to create new types of expression sys
tems for use in communication\, learning\, interactive games and digital m
edia systems. DiPaola will discuss and demonstrate his work in this area (
see ivizlab.sfu.ca) including iFace which uses an behavior based approach
for synthetic 3D facial communication\, and its applications in psychology
research\, gaming and learning. He will show his lab's ongoing work with:
the Vancouver Aquarium to create an Artificial Life based Beluga Whale In
teractive\, where visitors can collaboratively interact with a simulated p
od of wild beluga whales to learn more about marine mammal behaviors\, as
well as more experimental systems that explore computer creativity that cr
eate moving set design by extracting emotion out a music score or automati
cally evolving portrait painter programs using Genetic Programming (dipaol
a.org/evolve) as a way to enhance automatic computer creativity.
