and implications for polar ozone chemistry - Dr Francis Pope (University o

DESCRIPTION:A new experimental determination of the absorption spectrum of
chlorine peroxide (ClOOCl)\,(1) has potentially disproved well-establishe
d mechanisms used to describe the formation of ozone holes.(2) The work\nc
arried out at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory managed to synthesise ClO
OCl in yields and purity which were previously unattainable. The recorded
spectrum produces a lower ClOOCl photolysis rate\, and hence reduces the o
zone destruction attributable to ClOOCl. The talk will discuss the experim
ental aspects\, the analytical description of the recorded spectra\, and t
he implications of the findings with regard to ozone chemistry.\n\n(1) Pop
