DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 50th anniversary of space exploration. Pro
 f Pillinger will review the amazing progress that has been made during thi
 s period\, and the challenges that remain. \n\nHis research interests at t
 he Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute (PSSRI) of the Open Uni
 versity include the application of stable isotope and organic analysis to 
 planetary\, geological and environmental problems using laboratory and spa
 ce based studies. Prof Pillinger is well known in the media for his involv
 ement in the ill-fated Beagle 2 mission\, a British probe that formed part
  of the European Space Agency's 2003 Mars Express mission.\n\n*Suitable fo
