DESCRIPTION:Controlling the self-assembly of supramolecular structures is
vital for\nliving cells\, and a central challenge for engineering at the n
ano- and\nmicroscales. Nevertheless\, even particles without optimized sha
pes can\nrobustly form well-defined morphologies. This is the case in nume
rous\nmedical conditions where normally soluble proteins aggregate into\nf
ibers. Beyond the diversity of molecular mechanisms involved\, we\npropose
that fibers generically arise from the aggregation of irregular\nparticle
s with short-range interactions. Using minimal models of\nfrustrated aggre
gating particles\, we demonstrate robust fiber formation\nfor a variety of
particle shapes and aggregation conditions. Geometrical\nfrustration play
s a crucial role in this process\, and accounts for the\nrange of paramete
rs in which fibers form as well as for their\nmetastable\, yet long-lived
 character.
