DESCRIPTION:PRESTIGE LECTURE\n\nWith classical technology scaling running
out of steam\, predictions of doom and gloom about the future of the compu
ter business abound. However\, as we move from an era of human-centric con
nectivity to a new machine-centric era\, there are numerous opportunities
to innovate\, providing solutions that can scale to hundreds of billions o
r even trillions of interconnected intelligent devices. The defining featu
re of this era will be that computers become invisible and move from atten
tion-grabbing devices into the background. For some this is utopia\, for o
thers it conjures the imagery of George Orwell. This talk will examine the
technology underpinnings of this interconnected future and explore how th
e notion of trust must evolve to keep pace with both engineering and socia
l developments. How do we measure trust? How do we design trustworthy syst
ems when no one has full control and overall understanding? How do we know
that artificial intelligence is doing what it is supposed to? ...\n\nREGI
