DESCRIPTION:Load-displacement solutions for piles and shallow foundations
based on deformation fields and energy conservation\n\nAbstract:\nAn energ
y approach for the prediction of nonlinear foundation behaviour will be pr
esented. The approach is essentially a variant of the mobilisable strength
design (MSD) method. However\, unlike the MSD method in which the displac
ement field is constant\, in the presented approach it changes throughout
the loading sequence. The formulation entails three main\nstages: [1] ass
umption of admissible pattern functions from which displacement fields can
be assembled\, [2] equating external work to internal work\, and [3] mini
mization of internal work by variation of the displacement field using the
different pattern functions. The approach is demonstrated on two problems
 : 1) a vertically loaded shallow foundation\, and 2) laterally loaded pile
s.\n\nAnother variant of the MSD method\, entailing a simple nonlinear sca
ling scheme of stress-strain curves for the solution of laterally loaded p
 iles\, will also be presented.\n\n
