DESCRIPTION:Earth is a remarkable planet. Its temperature is so delicatel
y balanced that water is abundant in both liquid and solid forms. But as
our climate warms\, the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland will surely
respond. After more than a century of polar exploration\, the past decad
e of satellite measurements has painted an altogether new picture of how E
arth's ice sheets are changing. We know now that accelerating glaciers in
both continents are raising sea levels faster than the 2007 report of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projected. This seminar summar
ises the very recent achievements in our understanding of the polar ice sh
eets made possible by a constellation of Earth observing satellites.
