DESCRIPTION:Iron is released into the surface waters around the Crozet Pla
teau (50°E\, 46°S) through natural processes. This alleviates the main c
ontrol on phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean and causes a large phytoplan
kton bloom. My PhD involved studying this through remotely sensed data\, A
rgo float trajectories and profiles and in situ cruise data as part of the
CROZEX program. After a review of the importance of iron in the Southern
Ocean\, the difficulties of measuring it and previous artificial release e
xperiments I will present results relating the circulation\, iron supply a
nd light availability to the spatial structure and temporal development of
  the bloom.
