DESCRIPTION:Fab labs are field laboratories that bring fabrication capabil
ities to various parts of the world\, particularly to under served communi
ties. Labs around the world are used for invention\, design\, craft\, tech
nology education\, small business creation and personal expression in comm
unities from South Africa to the north of Norway.\n\nEach lab is outfitted
with high-precision computer controlled cutting machines\, an electronics
workbench and manual tools. These can be used to make\n\n * small structu
res and parts out of card board\, plywood or acrylic\,\n * circuit boards
with programmable micro controllers\,\n * large scale (house-sized) struct
ures out of metal and plywood\,\n * molds for plastic or rubber parts.\n\n
The talk will take the form of a show and tell. I'll relate some of my per
sonal experiences in the lab\, show many photos from the past 2 years and
talk about Fab 4--the latest global meeting of fab lab users in Chicago.\n
