as an effect upon health and go on to explore whether cortisol may be a ma
rker for\, and a mediator of\, this 'mind-body' link. Cortisol is an essen
tial hormone that performs a wide range of housekeeping tasks to regulate
physiological functioning across day and night. However cortisol is also t
he body's main stress response hormone: these dual roles can lead to probl
ems during exposure to chronic stress. Evidence will be presented for dysr
egulated diurnal patterns of cortisol secretion in relation to a range of
 individual differences and ill health.
