DESCRIPTION:The development of most autoimmune diseases is under the contr
ol of many genes but additionally is regulated by environmental factors. T
his is exemplified by studies of identical twins where the concordance rat
e for development of Type 1 diabetes is around 40%. Several autoimmune dis
eases\, including Type 1 diabetes\, are increasing in incidence in the dev
eloped world at a rate faster than can be accounted for by genetic change.
Our study of environmental factors modulating autoimmunity has highlighte
d a key role for infection in reducing the incidence of Type 1 diabetes. W
e think that protection from diabetes arises through an interaction betwee
n the infectious agent and the innate immune system such that circuits whi
ch regulate the autoimmune response are reinforced.
