DESCRIPTION:I will provide a short and selective overview of models of spe
cies coexistence. I will also present two new models\, a spatially structu
red model of species abundances\, and a spatially implicit model predictin
g both the abundances of species and their phylogenetic relatedness. I wil
l show how the parameters of these models can be inferred based on field d
ata. I will then present our first attempts to assemble a dataset designed
to the validation of such models in species-rich tropical forest tree com
munities of French Guiana. My emphasis will be on designing a proper field
strategy in a tropical forest project\, and I will show some of our early
and exciting results combining tools in plant physiology\, molecular biol
ogy\, and modelling. Finally I will discuss how existing models of biodive
rsity can benefit from such databases. \n\nhttp://www.edb.ups-tlse.fr/equi
