DESCRIPTION:Mike Burrows\, Principal Engineer at Google\, will describe Go
ogle's experiences with the Chubby lock service\, which is\nintended to pr
ovide coarse-grained locking as well as reliable (though low-volume) stora
ge for a\nloosely-coupled distributed system. Chubby provides an interfac
e much\nlike a distributed file system with advisory locks\, but the desig
n emphasis is\non availability and reliability\, as opposed to high perfor
mance. Many\ninstances of the service have been used for over a year\, wi
th several of them\neach handling a few tens of thousands of clients concu
rrently. The presentation\ndescribes the initial design and expected use\
, compares it with actual\nuse\, and explains how the design had to be mod
 ified to accommodate the\ndifferences.\n
