DESCRIPTION:The Farrell-Jones conjecture is an important conjecture at the
intersection of topology and geometric group theory. It concerns the K- a
nd L-theory of groups and has some interesting corollaries\, for example t
he Borel conjecture. This talk will be a very basic introduction to the st
atement of the conjecture and some of its implications. It will not be ass
umed that people are familiar with K- and L-theory.
