DESCRIPTION:This talk will not be primarily about machine learning.  It wi
 ll be a primer on information retrieval\, introducing some of the ideas wh
 ich are common in the field\, both from the point of view of practical sys
 tems and with regard to theory and experimentation.  Some pragmatic constr
 aints on real systems affect what kinds of models might in the end be usef
 ul.  I will attempt to analyse what aspects of this domain might need or b
 e susceptible to some form of learning\, as well as some of the complexiti
 es which might make learning difficult.\n
