DESCRIPTION:J E Hoare holds a PhD from SOAS in Japanese history. He joined
  the Research Department of the FCO in 1969\, reaching the rank of Researc
 h Counsellor. He served in the British Embassies in Seoul and Beijing\, an
 d in 2001 was appointed the first British representative in North Korea. S
 ince his retirement in 2003\, he has taught at SOAS\, and is a regular TV 
 and radio broadcaster. He has published widely on East Asian affairs.\n\nT
