DESCRIPTION:There is indirect evidence that volcanism influences ice-flow
in the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) but mapping of volcanoes here is li
mited to those that protrude through the ice sheet and those inferred by g
eophysical techniques. This talk will present evidence of a recent subgla
cial volcanic eruption that caused the deposition of ash and tephra over a
n area about 1/10th the size of Britain. At present we can only speculate
at the impact this eruption may have had on ice flow in this\, the most r
apidly changing\, region of the Antarctic ice sheet.
