DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will summarise recent developments in the struc
ture theory of infinite permutation groups. In particular I will present a
recent result which describes the structure of all subdegree-finite primi
tive permutation groups. This class of groups includes\, for example\, all
automorphism groups of locally finite primitive graphs.\n\nI will also di
scuss two consequences of this result. The first concerns topological grou
ps that are totally disconnected and locally compact and the second is a
structural description of those profinite groups that can be embedded into
a topological group as a maximal open subgroup.
