DESCRIPTION:In health care and many other fields of research\, interventio
ns are often described as being complex and have outcomes that are depende
nt on context. When these complex interventions fail to achieve their desi
red outcomes\, the explanation frequently provided is because they are bot
h complex and context dependent. Realist research approaches\, such as rea
list reviews can help make sense of these types of interventions or progra
mmes.\n\nThe seminar will outline the theory underlying realist approaches
and the key stages in a realist review. It will then move on to discuss w
hen doing a realist review might be most helpful and provide some illustra
tive examples of how realist reviews deal with complexity and context. Som
e time will be available for questions and discussion. \n\nDr Geoffrey Won
g\, MA MBBS MD(Res) MRCGP FHEA\, is Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffie
ld Department of Primary Care Health Sciences\, University of Oxford.\n\nT
his seminar will be chaired by Dr Ian Wellwood\, Senior Research Associate
\, Dept. of Public Health & Primary Care\, University of Cambridge.\n\n
