DESCRIPTION:This presentation reviews the history of collections and parti
cularly ethnographic collections made during Cook's voyages. The field has
been much studied over the last 50 years and it might be assumed that the
histories of extant artefacts and other records are now well established.
Taking as examples the travels of textiles and the misidentification of A
ustralian artefacts that have recently become highly controversial\, the t
alk explains why not\, and why new complexities have emerged that point to
a fresh programme of cross-disciplinary research.
