DESCRIPTION:The demand for satellite communications has grown dramatically
over the past decade. Currently there is very little unused radio frequen
cy spectrum available for use in satellite communications. New satellite b
ased applications such as high definition TV and high speed Internet acces
s require greater bandwidths then are available. This presentation investi
gates the use of direct sequence spread spectrum techniques to share spect
ral bands that are currently allocated to ground-based narrow band users.
The use of spread spectrum techniques theoretically should allow satellite
communications to co-exist with narrow band users. However\, additional m
easures to insure the operations are on a non-interference basis are requi
red in the form of a “smart” radio. An analysis of the traffic generat
ed by narrow band users is presented along with some unusual spectral phen
 omena.
