DESCRIPTION:Religion is hard to define and has many dimensions. Its langua
ge is often opaque. Gods have died and arisen\, but crop up in all societi
es. There have been numerous theories about ‘what is going on’ both in
the past and in the present. In particular\, in the 60’s and 70’s the
re were forecasts of wholesale secularisation as people became more prospe
rous and urban. Except in Western Europe\, there is now much evidence that
the predictions were false. Discuss!\n\nOn leaving school\, I went into t
he Royal Navy for five years. Then I was a student for seven years\, endin
g by doing a PhD at Corpus (Cambridge!) studying theologians who were tryi
ng to agree with each other. Then I got ordained: I have taught in a theol
ogical college\, then worked in a parish and in two other cathedrals. I am
now Dean of Christ Church\, Oxford which is a dual foundation of college
and cathedral\, so I am Dean of the cathedral and ‘Master’ of the coll
ege. My research interest is in the interaction between social context and
  religious belief.
