DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*\n\nSpeech in whistled modality is attested around t
he globe and currently attracting increased research interest. Such variet
ies are based on the ambient spoken language in all known cases. In this t
alk I will review the nature and current status of whistled speech\, befor
e reporting the results of a series of recent experiments on the perceptio
n of whistled language by non-whistling native speakers of the correspondi
ng spoken language. Such speakers are able to discriminate between their l
anguage and others when whistled\, and also display sprachbund-like effect
s dependent on the contrasting language. Additional individual factors aff
ecting perception and discrimination are also investigated. \n\n*About the
speaker*\n\nMary Ann Walter is Associate Professor of Teaching English as
a Foreign Language at the Middle East Technical University\, Northern Cyp
