DESCRIPTION:Steffi Richter is Professor of Japanese Studies and Director o
 f the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Leipzig. She wa
 s first trained in philosophy at Lomonossov-University in Moscow with a sp
 ecialization in the philosophy of science. In 1982 she won a Ph.D. scholar
 ship from the Japanese Ministry of Education that resulted in her 1985 dis
 sertation on Nishida Kitaro. Before taking up the chair in Leipzig in 1996
 \, Steffi Richter was an Associate Professor for Comparative Cultural Stud
 ies at Tôkyô University. Her present research focuses on nationalism and
  historical revisionism in East Asia as well as on the relationship betwee
 n consumer culture and identity formation in modern and contemporary Japan
 . Her publications include a book on scientific thought in Japan  (Ent-Zwe
 iung. Wissenschaftliches Denken in Japan zwischen Tradition und Moderne\; 
  Berlin\, 1994) and numerous articles in German. Her English articles incl
 ude “Staging Good Taste\, Staging 'Japaneseness’: Consumer Culture\, t
 he Department Store Mitsukoshi and Performance of Modern Identities in Jap
 an” (Asiatische Studien LVIII\, 3/2004) and “The History Textbook Cont
 roversy as an indicator of National Self-Reflection” (In: Gesine Foljant
 y-Jost\, ed.\, Japan in the 1990s: Crisis as an Impetus for Change [Münst
 er\, 2004]). She also has co-edited a volume on Reading Manga: Local and G
 lobal Perceptions of Japanese Comics (Leipzig\, 2006).
