DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Shallow water equations have been used widely to stu
dy the dam-break wave propagations. They are a set of hyperbolic equation
s\, which admit discontinuities in the weak solutions. The discontinuitie
s correspond to the hydraulic jumps and bores. However\, the basic assump
tions behind the shallow water equations include smooth variance\, hydrost
atic pressure distribution and zero vertical velocity components\, which a
re apparently violated close to the discontinuities. The smoothed particl
 e hydrodynamics model\, where the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation
s with a free surface are solved\, has been used to quantify the inaccurac
ies of the shallow water equations for predicting the initial-stage dam-br
 eak flows.
