DESCRIPTION:The manipulation of ultracold fermionic and bosonic quantum ga
ses in optical\nlattices permits access to a wide field of exciting experi
ments ranging from\nthe investigation and simulation of solid state physic
s to quantum computing\nand ultracold chemistry. \nIn our appartus we symp
 athetically cool 40K and 87Rb atoms in a magnetic\nquadrupole trap\, trans
fer them to a crossed optical trap and cool both\nspecies to quantum degen
eracy. Subsequently we load pure K samples or K / Rb\nmixtures into a blue
detuned three dimensional optical lattice. The\ncombination of a red detu
ned dipole trap with a blue detuned optical lattice\nallows us to vary the
external confinement while leaving the lattice\npotential unchanged. \nWe
use this feature to study the transit from a metallic phase to a band\nin
sulating phase for a single spin species or for a spin mixture. For the Rb
\n/ K mixtures we control the interaction strength to search for ways to\
nefficiently K / Rb atom pairs on the lattice sites\, which is an importan
t\nprerequisite for experiments with heteronuclear molecules. \n
