DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSerendipity plays a significant role in astronomic
al discovery. Astronomers generally cannot experiment with their objects a
nd must rely on interpreting the objects and phenomena as they find them.
A wide range of examples from volcanoes to planets to neutron stars to bla
ck holes will be used to illustrate how an observationally-driven subject
like astronomy works. Finally\, how a 'look before you think' approach fit
s in with ever more expensive telescopes will be considered.
