DESCRIPTION:Modern fitness trackers provide easy means to acquire physiolo
gical sensing data of users (e.g. as heart rate) throughout the day. This
data has huge potential to be used in novel applications or research conte
xts\; however\, their suitability is not well understood.\nIn this talk\,
I will discuss our results on the data quality of 3 fitness wearables unde
r different physical activity and stressful conditions. The findings indic
ate\, that performance of the devices varies amongst different conditions
and is mostly influenced by movement. Still\, we believe there are applica
tions where this tradeoff is outweighed by the benefits of those small dev
ices\; hence\, I will further present and discuss our suggestions on the s
uitability of different wearable technologies in research scenarios depend
ing on the requirements and nature of the studies. The last part of the ta
lk will focus on my future research directions on applying these findings
in the wild by investigating how we can use data from smartwatches to pred
ict how people feel.\n\nBio:\nKatrin is a PhD student in the third year at
the Queen Mary University London. Her research focuses on the use of smar
t wearable sensing to improve health and wellbeing of individuals. After g
raduating with a M.Sc. in Computer Science in 2012\, she worked two years
as a research associate at the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida. T
his work was focused on the development of novel approaches for software m
odelling visualisations using 3D and virtual reality technologies. She is
especially interested in using ubiquitous technologies like smartphones an
d wearables to detect emotions and influencing factors in everyday life se
ttings. Her general interest lie in the field of emerging and social media
 ting technologies and human factors.
