DESCRIPTION:Piranesi's colossal candelabra were made in the 1770s from fra
gments found near Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli. Some of them were sold for
staggering sums to British collectors\, but they have known abrupt reversa
ls in appreciation\, and even now are among the least studied of his works
. In my talk I will address a prominent\, but equally under-researched fea
ture of them: their lifelike\, if not animated appearance\, and will consi
der this both from the perspective of ancient lamp-lore and modern psychol
 ogy.
