DESCRIPTION:William MacAskill became the youngest associate professor of p
hilosophy in the world when he joined the faculty at the University of Oxf
ord aged 28. He’s also a social entrepreneur who’s founded two Y Combi
nator-backed startups\, which have raised over $1.5 billion in pledged don
ations to charity.\n\nTo top it off\, he’s the author of the successful
book “Doing Good Better”. Julia Galef\, co-founder of the Center for A
pplied Rationality\, comments that “occasionally in life\, you get the p
leasure of encountering a new way of thinking about the world that feels o
bviously true and important\, yet had never occurred to you before. I pred
ict this book will spark such an experience for many.”\n\nWe warmly invi
te you to the Cambridge Union on Friday 13th October for such an experienc
 e. This talk is open to all\, not just Union members. Come and hear why Ma
cAskill’s ideas have been influencing people from The New York Times to
10 Downing Street.\n\nThis talk will be an introduction to the global move
ment of Effective Altruism\, from someone widely considered to be its co-f
ounder. Effective altruism is about answering one simple\, yet difficult\,
question: how can we use our resources to help others the most? Rather th
an just doing what feels right\, Effective Altruism uses evidence and care
ful analysis to find the best ways to make a difference.\n\nOf all the hou
rs you have in Cambridge\, this hour could have the greatest impact on you
 r world outlook and life.
