DESCRIPTION:Professor Malcolm Longair was the Jacksonian Professor of Natu
 ral Philosophy in the Cavendish Laboratory\, Cambridge\, from 1991 to 2008
 . He was also the Head of the Cavendish Laboratory from 1997 to 2005. Sinc
 e 2016\, he has been Editor-in-chief of the Biographical Memoirs of Fellow
 s of the Royal Society. Longair's primary research interests are in the fi
 elds of high energy astrophysics and astrophysical cosmology. He has writt
 en eight books and many articles on this work. He was awarded the CBE in t
 he 2000 New Year Honours List and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in
  2004. The talk will be contrasting what we teach in physics courses with
