 cs and international implications of events in today's Ukraine and feature
 s the foremost experts in the fields of Ukrainian politics\, history\, and

 idge. \n\nThe Sixteenth Annual Stasiuk Lecture\, which will be held in the
  *Umney Theatre of Robinson College at 17:30 on Friday\, 23 February 2018*
 \, will be delivered by *Professor Mark von Hagen*. His presentation is en
 titled _*Brest-Litovsk and the Making of Modern Ukraine and Russia*_. \n\n
 In February 1918\, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk facilitated the emergence o
 f an independent\, internationally-recognised Ukrainian state. In the Annu
 al Cambridge Stasiuk Lecture\, Professor von Hagen explains these tumultuo
 us events of a century ago and reflects upon their resonance today\, at a 
 critical juncture in the history of Ukrainian-Russian relations.\n\nThe ev

 ssor Mark von Hagen teaches the history of Eastern Europe and Russia\, wit
 h a focus on Ukrainian-Russian relations\, at Arizona State University in 
 the United States. Prior to his tenure at ASU\, he worked for 24 years at 
 Columbia University\, where he chaired the Department of History and direc
 ted the Harriman Institute. He is a former President of the International 
 Association for Ukrainian Studies.\n\nMark von Hagen is the author of _Sol
 diers in the Proletarian Dictatorship: The Red Army and the Soviet Sociali
 st State\, 1917-1930_ (Cornell\, 1990)\; co-editor (with Andreas Kappeler\
 , Zenon Kohut and Frank Sysyn) of _Culture\, Nation\, Identity: the Ukrain
 ian-Russian Encounter\, 1600-1945_ (Toronto\, 2003)\; and has co-edited (w
 ith Jane Burbank and Anatoly Remnev) the title _Geographies of Empire: Rul
 ing Russia\, 1700-1991_ (Indiana\, 2004). He has written articles and essa
 ys on topics in historiography\, civil-military relations\, nationality po
 litics and minority history\, and cultural history. He is on the editorial
  boards of the journals _Ab Imperio_ and _Kritika_.\n\nVon Hagen was educa
 ted at Georgetown University\, Indiana University-Bloomington\, and Stanfo
 rd University\, where he received his Ph.D. He has also taught at Stanford
  University\, Yale University\, the Free University of Berlin\, and the Ec
 ole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris).\n
