DESCRIPTION:Prof. Baulcombe is a plant scientist and geneticist with inter
ests in\ngenetic regulation\, genetic disease resistance and gene silencin
 g. With\nAndrew Hamilton he has discovered the small interfering RNA that
is the\nspecificity determinant in RNA-mediated gene silencing and with ot
her\nmembers of his research group\, he helped unravel the importance of s
mall\ninterfering RNA in defense against viruses and in epigenetics. He wa
s\nelected to the Royal Society in 2001 and the United States National Aca
 demy\nof Sciences in 2005.
