DESCRIPTION:This Public Lecture is given in celebration of the 25th Annive
rsary of the Wolfson Press Fellowship Programme\, a scheme which brings jo
urnalists to Cambridge for a term to research a project of their own choos
ing. To date\, the Programme has welcomed nearly 300 journalists from 46
countries. The lecturer\, John Lloyd\, is a distinguished journalist who
has been a fierce critic of the UK media in recent years. He argues that
our media are no longer functioning as an inquiring check on the excesses
of the political class but instead have become an alternative establishmen
t\, dedicated to a theatrical distrust of individual politicians and a cal
culated indifference to the real-life intricacies of policy making and gov
ernment.\n\nThe lecture will be chaired by Dame Patricia Hodgson\, Princip
al of Newnham College and a member of the BBC Trust.
