DESCRIPTION:*This interactive mathematical session will focus on a range o
 f tricks that appear to be magic\; however\, we will closely examine them 
 to see what is really happening behind the scenes. Some of the tricks work
  as a result of clever\, but simple\, mathematics\, whilst others are more
  a case of probability or psychology.* A few of the exercises will be left
  unsolved by the group so students may think about possible solutions afte
 r the lecture. Students are asked to bring a pencil or pen and a basic cal
 culator to the lecture.\n\n*About the speaker:* Adam Boddison is a freelan
 ce mathematics consultant interested in engaging the minds of young people
  with how maths affects everyday life. In addition to teaching maths at bo
 th primary and secondary levels\, he is a postgraduate researcher investig
 ating how video conferencing technology can enrich the maths curriculum at
  Key Stage 2. Adam's wider interests include strategy games\, magic and ps
 ychology.\n\n*Audience:* secondary students\, ages 11-14*\n\n<b>Admission
