DESCRIPTION:Royal Society Crick Prize Lecture\nBy Professor Geraint Rees M
RCP PhD\, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience\, University College London\
n\n \n\nSynopsis: \n\nEverything we know about the world comes to us throu
gh our brain. Yet for each of us our own conscious mental world of thought
s and feelings is isolated and private. Despite several centuries of resea
rch on the brain\, communication through language or gesture remains the o
nly way we can discover the conscious thoughts and experiences of others.
But if thoughts and feelings arise from patterns of neural activity in the
brain\, then it should be possible to directly decode such conscious expe
riences from brain activity alone. Recent advances in brain imaging techno
logy raise just such a possibility\, by showing that it is possible to acc
urately decode a person's conscious experience based only on non-invasive
measurements of their brain activity. Such brain reading' abilities may tr
ansform our understanding of the brain and provide important new medical i
nsights\, but also raise important ethical issues concerning the privacy o
f personal thought.\n\nThis lecture is FREE. No advance booking or registr
ation required.\n\nThis event will be webcast live at www.royalsoc.ac.uk/l
 ive/ \n\n
