DESCRIPTION:Skills Talk: MATLAB – The Language of Technical Computing\,
Will Carson\n\nMATLAB is a numerical computing environment that allows eas
y matrix manipulation\, plotting of data\, and interfacing with programs i
n other languages. There is a huge supported library of toolboxes that wil
l enable simple and effective implementation of complex scenarios.\n\nSkil
ls Talk: Kernel Development: A Primer\, Rip Sohan\n\nKernel development i
s the process of modifying system behaviour at the OS level through modifi
cation of the OS itself. Traditionally\, it has been viewed as a large-ef
fort low-return exercise to be avoided and\nleft to skilled individuals.
However\, due to recent advances in both hardware and software architectur
e this view is rapidly becoming outdated.\n\nIn this skills talk\, and wit
h emphasis on the Linux OS\, I will outline the mechanisms for kernel deve
lopment in a modern environment. Specifically\, the talk will focus on: (i
) getting started\, (ii) gaining experience\, (iii) minimising development
effort and time and (iv) alternatives to kernel development.
