DESCRIPTION:In this talk we will show\, that methods from conceptual (ofte
n called abstract) Harmonic Analysis allow not only a unified view on prob
lems\narising in theoretical physics (coherent states)\, but also lead to
\nefficient algorithms for signal processing applications. Arguments \nfr
om group representation theory allow the derivation of fundamental\nidenti
ties which equally important for the understanding of Gabor\nsystems from
a theoretical point of view as well as for numerical\ncomputations over fi
nite Abelian groups. Appropriate function spaces\,\nthe so-called modulati
on spaces resp. the Segal algebra S0(G)\nallow the analysis of operators (
be it the Kohn-Nirenberg or the\nAnti-Wick calculus)\, but are also well s
uited to study the \nproblem of approximating operators over Euclidean spa
ces by similar \noperators over (sufficiently large) finite groups\, which
are\nthen accessible to actual computations. \n\n
