DESCRIPTION:Nanostructures show interesting electromagnetic properties com
 pared to macroscopic materials\; one such phenomenon is the establishment 
 of surface plasmons in metal particles and structures. While these propert
 ies have been used for centuries and understood for decades modern TEM tec
 hniques allow an unprecedented view into such structures and can probe the
  electromagnetic forces in action.\n  In this study both conventional TEM 
 imaging and energy dispersive techniques have been used to characterise th
 e synthesis of metal-dielectric nanostructures and the surface plasmon pro
 perties of both individual and interacting particles.
