DESCRIPTION:Skills Talk: Programming ATMEL Microcontrollers\, Simon Hay\n\
nIn this skills talk\, I will discuss my experiences with the ATMEL range
of microcontrollers and offer some tips on how best to take advantage of t
hem in your research. The talk will focus on getting started with hardwar
e and microcontroller programming\, in what circumstances they can be usef
ul and some common pitfalls to avoid. \n\nResearch Talk: Orthogonal Distri
buted Carrier Multiple Access in Wireless Networks\, Bogdan Roman\n\nWith
the rapid growth of Wireless LAN capability for mobile devices such as lap
tops\, handhelds\, cell phones and vehicles\, the size and mobility levels
of wireless LANs increase\, having a direct impact on scalability and per
formance. This talk will present a novel strategy for accessing the wirele
ss medium\, based on a node elimination algorithm using unmodulated bursts
of energy\, that scales with the network size and provides considerable g
ains in network throughput compared to existing and proposed solutions. Se
veral extensions will be presented as well\, such as reliable Quality of S
ervice and extended applicability in distributed leader election and colla
 borative networks.\n\n
