DESCRIPTION:Electrically charged particles\, such as the electron\, are\nu
biquitous. By contrast\, no elementary particles with a net magnetic\nchar
ge have ever been observed\, despite intensive and prolonged\nsearches. We
pursue an alternative strategy\, namely\nthat of realizing them not as el
ementary but rather as emergent\nparticles\, i.e.\, as manifestations of t
he correlations present in a\nstrongly interacting many-body system. Here
we\nshow that magnetic monopoles do emerge in a class of exotic\nmagnets k
nown collectively as spin ice: the dipole moment of the\nunderlying electr
onic degrees of freedom fractionalises into monopoles\nin a process that w
 e term Dirac string condensation.
