DESCRIPTION:The classical statistical mechanical theory of colloidal\nsusp
ensions combines the insights of Stokes and Smoluchowksi\, on the\ndissipa
tive forces between particles and fluid\, and of Einstein and\nLangevin\,
on the corresponding fluctuating forces. We have shown\nrecently how this
theory can be generalized to active colloids -\nparticles which produce f
luid flow even in the absence of rigid body\nmotion - and be used to ratio
nalize experiments involving collective\nphenomena\, in particular phase s
 eparation\, symmetry-breaking and\nlong-ranged order. I will describe thes
e results in outline and\ndiscuss other applications of the theory.
