DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr Annamaria Motrescu-Mayes\, Cambridge Univers
 ity\, discusses how specific visual literacies\, from the early 1930s to 2
 010s\, have shaped representations of gender hierarchies\, social conflict
 s and political identities in India. She considers examples of British col
 onial fake ethnography alongside cases of contemporary re-imagined social 
 roles and identities. The talk draws on examples of amateur footage\, mobi
 le phone films and governmental advertising campaigns as well as on rare a
 rchival footage selected from the collections held by the Centre of South 
 Asian Studies\, Cambridge\, the Imperial War Museum\, and popular social m
 edia sites.\nThis presentation is suitable for ages 18yrs and up
