DESCRIPTION:With the collapse of communism\, the old Eastern bloc disappea
red from the map as the various states of the region were integrated into
Western structures such as NATO and the EU. The region appeared to have re
ached the End of History.\n\nNow\, after nearly three decades\, Eastern Eu
rope is re-emerging as a distinct geopolitical entity\, situated at the ep
icentre of the three great international crises of our time: the fragmenta
tion of the EU\, the New Cold War between Russia and the West and the outb
reak of conflict in the Middle East.\n\nIn this presentation\, Timothy Les
s from the University’s Forum on Geopolitics talks about the return of E
astern Europe and the significance of the continent’s east for Europe’
s overall security and political architecture.\n\nThis lecture links to a
project which the Forum on Geopolitics will run in 2018-19 on ‘The New I
 ntermarium’.
