DESCRIPTION:The moduli space of curves (or Riemann surfaces of dimension 1
) has\nbeen studied by geometers and topologists since Riemann's papers in
the\nlate 19th century. More recently\, the subject has had significant i
nteractions\nwith mathematics physics. While much is known about the geome
try of the\nmoduli space\, many important questions remain open.\n\nI will
discuss basic cohomology classes\, their associated rings\, and the\nrela
tions they satisfy. The study has origins in ideas of Mumford from the 19
80s\, conjectures\nof Faber-Zagier from the 90s\, and more recent proposal
s of Pixton.\nThe role of special hypergeometric series and the connectio
ns to\nCohomological Field Theories will be highlighted.\n\nThere will be
a wine reception following the talk in the Central Core.
