DESCRIPTION:*Seminar overview:*\n\nCanary Wharf Crossrail station is the f
irst station on the Crossrail cross-London railway project to be construct
ed and\, at the time of construction\, the only one let as a design-and-bu
ild contract with developer Canary Wharf Group. Early involvement of the d
eveloper in the project allowed significant optimisation of the station bo
x design from the original Crossrail reference design scheme. Innovative t
hinking\, local knowledge and willingness to break with the norm enabled t
he station to be delivered at 58% of the cost of the reference design. Con
struction activities started in late 2008 and 3.5 years later the station
was handed over to Crossrail in March 2012\, five months ahead of programm
 e. In his talk\, Hoe will describe the design and construction challenges
faced by the project teams focusing on the geotechnical aspects of this pr
oject.\n\n*Biography:*\n\nAfter graduated from University of Aberdeen in 1
990\, Hoe joined Arup Geotechnics in September the same year. Over 23 year
s with Arup\, he has managed and led the geotechnical design of many major
infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas. These include Heathrow Ai
 rport\, Crossrail\, Barcelona Container Port\, Wembley Stadium\, Channel T
unnel Rail Link and various projects in Hong Kong\,\nSouth Korea\, Singap
ore MRT and Malaysia LRT. Hoe has the unique skills in the design/manageme
nt of geotechnical projects and the application of numerical methods for s
olving complex 2D and 3D geotechnical soil structure interaction problems.
Hoe joined COWI UK Ltd in 2013 and in the last four years he has involved
in several major infrastructure and development projects in the UK and ov
erseas. These include the Mersey Gateway Bridge\, Garden Bridge\, Lower Th
ames Crossing\, HS2\, Leicester Square Hotel and Montgomery Bridge in the
UK\, Copenhagen to Ringsted railway\, Fehmen Link in Denmark\, Constantine
Viaduct in Algeria\, Anji Khad Bridge in northern India and Shen Zhong Li
