DESCRIPTION:Philosophers from different eras\, locations\, and philosophic
al traditions have all used short chunks of text to write their philosophi
cal work. Yet today\, we are hugely reliant on the essay as the prime form
for philosophical output.\n\nThis talk will be a panel discussion with sp
eakers from four different faculties\, covering thinkers from three contin
ents and 2500 years.\n\nHow can we use form to achieve our philosophical g
oals? How have aphorisms and fragments been used in different philosophica
l traditions? What makes all of this work philosophical? Would these think
ers have used Twitter?\n\nPanel discussion:\n* Professor Gábor Betegh of
the Faculty of Classics will be speaking on Heraclitus.\n* Dr. Jenny Zhao
of the Needham Research Institute will address Confucius.\n* Dr. Arif Ahme
d of the Faculty of Philosophy will be looking at aspects of Wittgenstein.
\n* Dr. Nolen Gertz (@ethicistforhire) of the University of Twente speakin
g on Twitter.\nEach speaker will give a concise presentation. This will be
followed by a moderated panel discussion and Q&A.
