DESCRIPTION:Fairy tales are strewn with grain\, and not simply along the p
ath into the deep\, dark woods. As the most frequent foodstuffs in Western
European literary fairy tales\, foods such as bread\, porridge\, and cake
are sometimes imperceptible as foods of the everyday. Yet\, these foods a
re also laden with historical information\, and\, by viewing them in their
own context\, our understanding of the tales themselves can be enhanced.
Using literary texts\, historical cookbooks\, and quantitative data analys
is\, this talk will examine a selection of material food objects as they o
ccur in fairy tales.\n\n*Dr Rose Williamson* completed her PhD\, entitled
A Historical and Literary Analysis of Grain Details in Literary Fairy Tale
s\, through the Sussex Centre for Folklore\, Fairy Tales\, and Fantasy at
the University of Chichester. She also recently co-wrote The World Treasur
y of Fairy Tales & Folklore with Dr Joanna Gilar.\n
