DESCRIPTION:Linear groups (where we allow any field) which are also finite
 ly generated are reasonably well behaved in terms of abstract group theore
 tic properties (for instance being residually finite and satisfying the Ti
 ts alternative). However they need not be good from a geometric point of v
 iew (eg they can have distorted infinite cyclic subgroups).\n\nHowever we 
 show that the finitely generated groups in the title do have much stronger
  properties in line with (one definition of) non positively curved groups\
 , and we present applications.\n\n\n
