DESCRIPTION:The legendary Greek philosopher Aristotle observed that the va
lidity of an argument can be determined by its structure instead of its co
ntent. His classic example was the ‘syllogism’: All men are mortal\; S
ocrates is a man\; therefore\, Socrates is mortal. Given the structure of
this argument\, if the premises are true then the conclusion is necessaril
y also true. Aristotle’s logic became a state of the art tool in philoso
phy and the sciences for over two thousand years. Equally influential is h
is survey of misleading arguments – fortunately for us in the 21st centu
ry\, these are now expressed in the form of captioned images which we revi
 ew in this talk.
